How children learn more than one language?
Simultaneous Acquisition
· Occurs when a child is raised bilingually from birth or is introduced to a new language before the age of three.
· Children learning two languages go through the same developmental stages as a child learning one language.
Sequential Acquisition
· Occurs when the second language is introduced after the first language has established, generally after the age of three.
· Common when children immigrate to a new country or where a native language is spoken at home before they start school.
Bilingual Immersion at school
· Learning a second language is integrated with the academic curriculum.
· All teaching and conversation takes place in the new language.
· Aim is to teach the new language in the same way as the first language was learned.
Bilingualism at home
·
One person language model involves parents who speak two different languages.
·
One parent speaks to the child
in their native language, and the other uses the second language.
·
The minority language model
is an option if you and your partner both speak the same native language in the
family home.
·
Children then learn the majority
language such as English at school.
